Describe a language other than English that you would like to learn
One language that I would genuinely love to learn, apart from English, is Japanese. It’s not only one of the most fascinating languages in Asia, but it also reflects a rich cultural heritage that I’ve always been drawn to.
Japanese is primarily spoken in Japan, of course, but thanks to the popularity of Japanese pop culture—like anime, manga, and J-pop—there’s a growing number of learners and speakers across the world. Countries like Brazil, the Philippines, and even the United States have vibrant Japanese-learning communities.
Now, when it comes to difficulties, I believe that learning three distinct writing systems—Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji—would be extremely challenging. Kanji, especially, involves memorizing thousands of characters, which seems overwhelming at first. Also, the honorific speech levels in Japanese can be tricky to master because they require you to adjust your grammar and vocabulary depending on the person you’re speaking to.
On the other hand, I think pronunciation would be relatively easy. Japanese has a fairly limited number of sounds compared to English, and most of them are consistent. Additionally, the sentence structure is quite logical, and once you understand the basic grammar patterns, you can build sentences effectively.
The main reason I’d like to learn Japanese is because I’m deeply passionate about Japanese culture and technology. I’m also a huge fan of Studio Ghibli films, and I would love to watch them without subtitles one day. Besides that, Japan is one of my dream travel destinations, so being able to communicate with locals in their native language would make the experience far more immersive and meaningful.
All in all, even though learning Japanese might take years of dedication, I think it would be incredibly rewarding and open up many doors, both personally and professionally.
Describe a time when you learned English or improved your English skills
I’d like to talk about a time when I significantly improved my English skills, which was about two years ago when I was preparing for the IELTS exam. This happened while I was studying at a language center in my hometown.
To improve my English, I enrolled in an intensive IELTS preparation course that lasted for three months. The classes focused on all four skills—listening, reading, writing, and speaking. What helped me the most was the speaking practice with my teacher and classmates. We had mock speaking tests every week, and I also used apps like BBC Learning English to practice listening and vocabulary at home. Additionally, I started watching English movies without subtitles to get used to natural conversations.
The main reason I wanted to improve my English was to get a good IELTS score so I could apply for a scholarship to study abroad. I knew that strong English skills would open up many opportunities for my future career as well. Besides, I’ve always wanted to communicate confidently with people from different countries.
I felt really excited and motivated during this experience, especially when I noticed my progress, like being able to express my ideas more clearly or understanding fast-paced conversations. However, it was also challenging at times because I had to balance my studies with work, and sometimes I felt frustrated if I made mistakes. Overall, it was a rewarding journey, and I’m proud of how much I improved.
